FeelGooder Asks: What Restores You When You’re Sick?

In my part of the world, everyone’s coming down with colds and flus as we grind our way through a cold old winter.

I’ve had a chest infection for the last few weeks (!), so I thought I’d get your opinions:

My approach is multi-pronged:
  • Feel sorry for self.
  • Stay in bed all day.
  • Get up only when the fire is lit, swaddling self with blankets on the couch.
  • Complain of headache/sore throat/etc. to solicit sympathy.
  • Accept offers of snacks, hot drinks, etc.
  • Blearily read or watch a movie.

It’s all a bit pathetic, isn’t it? But for me, accepting that I’m feeling pathetic and letting others look after me is what restores me when I’m sick. To know that others are there for me is really important—the best medicine, I’d say.

  1. I for one, feel better when I pray. Prayer is very powerful!

  2. For me the best use of life is doing stuff. Sickness hinders this. That frustration pulls me out to get down and start doing things again. That feeling restores me.

  3. Usually a prolonged sleep followed by a hot shower helps things along. If I feel up to it sometimes I exercise to get some more energy pumping through my body. That and lots of fluid.

  4. I’m like you – but probably more miserable. I have an enormously high pain tolerance but a super duper low discomfort tolerance. haha

I’m normally not one to use much medicine, but if I have a sore throat – I’ll down ‘tylenol nighttime’ at any time of the day! One time I sat down to watch TV with a bag of Dorito’s and a bottle of NyQuill.

Great tips, guys 🙂 Think I’ll try some of these!

I can definitely relate to your comment, Himanshu’s—I get frustrated too, and that’s usually a motivator that gets me well soon enough 🙂

  6. I try to sleep more. Sleeping heals!

  7. Sleep on the couch! Downtime is good for you when you are sick! It is your body’s way of healing! I would also lay on that couch by the fire swaddling under the covers by the fire, just peaking my toes out. Being a little w family is good also. But only a little. And I’d accept cold drinks and chicken soup. Nothing like chicken soup, posicles and love for the soul! Can’t read or watch TV when sick, but my stuffed animal and kitty would keep me nice and toasty, LOL. Finally, I would pray. Jesus does wonders!

  8. I agree with the poster before, sleeping on the couch is the best when I’m sick. If you are forced to stay home, you may as well be cozy on the couch. Just laying there, half asleep, watching movies all day works for me. Gotta have a steady supply of tissues, plenty of fluids, and sore throat drops.
