FeelGooder Asks: What Music Makes You Feel Good?

For many people, music has a huge impact on our moods. It’s also integral to our lives—many of us couldn’t imagine life without music.

One very cool thing about music, especially in a globalized world, is that it bridges the cultural divide without the need for words: if something sounds good to you, it sounds good, whether or not you can understand the lyrics, or whether or not it even has lyrics.

What music makes you feel good?

From the Halcyon Digest website

If you’re like me, you could spend all day answering this question. To save everyone’s sanity, I’ll just mention one album I’ve bought recently, which I’m really enjoying.

It’s Halcyon Digest, by Deerhunter. To be honest, I have no idea how I came across it (it certainly wasn’t my friends—we all have pretty different tastes in music), but I love it.

It’s great to work to, it’s danceable, it’s got great lyrics—you name it, this album’s got it.

And: it makes me feel good. Why? Well, to me that question is a bit like asking why you love someone. It’s too complex and subconscious to explain. But I think it has something to do with musical style, themes, and very cool sounds.

That’s me. What music makes you feel good? I’d love to get some album suggestions from you…

  1. Hey Georgina. First thanks for the opportunity to guest post this week!

I love listening to Jack Johnson. It’s danceable too, also has great lyrics and catchy. It always gets me into a good mood when I listen to it.

I love his voice too. Listen to him if you haven’t before. 🙂

  2. Anything by Andrea Bocelli. It doesn’t matter if he’s singing in Italian, Spanish or English. The power of his voice moves me upward all the same. His songs make me envision elegantly dressed couples dancing, and I’ve always loved the rhythm and romance of couples dancing.

I can’t say I can work to his music. His voice is too dreamy and the reach of his vocal range too attention-grabbing. But, if you ever need to step away from the everyday for just a moment and breathe, this is the artist I’d recommend you do so to.

Have a beautiful rest of the week.

  3. Hey Georgina,
I am a big fan of music from the eighties. There were so many good groups back then from all over the world.

Maybe some celtic music and also some bluegrass thrown in for good measure.

  4. Hi Georgina

    Thanks for asking.

Just yesterday I downloaded all this great music from my Apple computer on to my iPhone. I dug out all my old CDs and added them – 52 artists – 804 songs – I’m in heaven….so this morning I secretly put in my earphones while in bed – the cat curled up on top and my wife next to me and there I was listening to The Beatles, James Blunt, Billy Joel, Lang Lang, Andrea Bocelli and I know that I have Beethoven waiting in the wings, Schubert, Hillsong, Coldplay….

    – and shhhh don’t tell anyone – but in the 80’s I even made some recordings – and when my ego needs a boost in the right direction I may even slink in a few songs from ‘yours truly’ – now that is a blast from the past – the 80’s – and then I might just pop in to say hi to Michael Buble, The London Symphony Orchestra or the Royal Philharmonic and finish it off with a good dose of Cat Stevens…..oh what musical bliss! Oh and did I tell you that I am a stage musical buff too…

  5. Oh boy – just about anything!
Otis Redding “Down in the Valley” makes me SMILE!
    Joni Mitchell makes me BREATHE!
    Alison Krause makes me WONDER!
Mary J Blige makes me feel STRONG!
I could go on and on 😀

  6. Happy guitar music like Bob Evans from Regina Saskatchewan Canada is feel-good for me
