FeelGooder Asks: What Inspires You?

Inspiration can seem a flighty creature. Sometimes, we’re completely uninspired. Others, it can be hard to think of things that aren’t inspiring in some way. So I thought it’d be a good idea for us to note a few inspirations here, for the times when inspiration is lacking.

What inspires you?

Cheesemaking: my latest experiment

The thing that inspires me most is experimentation—trying out new stuff. That might be cutting up a log or traveling somewhere I’ve never been before … or anything in between. I just like to try things out.

For me, new experiences are inspirational because they reveal so much about the world, about things we don’t know and can’t imagine until we give them a shot.

There’s also something addictive about experimenting with life: failure can present a challenge, and a success can spur further experimentation. It’s a win-win. Of course, failure can also present us with our own bald-faced failure, but we can learn even from failed experiments. It’s hard to believe sometimes, but it’s true. And most are at least partially successful—even if that success lies exclusively in learning what not to do.

Experimentation inspires me. What inspires you?

  1. “Emotional Fireworks” and Goosebumps that occur when your life experiments payoff, that is what inspires me.

  2. Hi Georgina,
When I have a breakthrough in my life. You know, when we are chugging along on a goal and then we hit a wall for a short period of time and then whamo, we break through the wall.

  3. There are a lot of things that inspire me but when I read I often get inspired. It gives me the opportunity to be challenged emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. Reading often makes me think about things that I haven’t thought about before. Frankly, I love learning!

  4. Hmmm… Let me see – Learning something new, creating something on my own, facing my fears, listening to my Inner Guide, thoughts of what I want in Life, people who surmount big difficulties to get to their goal, people who never give up. These are some of the things that inspire me.

  5. Most people forget one thing when they have inspiration: they don’t take action!
One thing I have learned is, when you want to do something or something is inspiring you just do it. Don’t think of the negatives things, but always look at the positive things in live and go for it.

  6. I experiment a lot as well with ingredient substitutions. That inspires me and helps me cope with all of our food allergies in our house. The fact that I was never really taught how to cook, and now I’m coming up with all these unique recipes and everyone thinks they are delicious.

My inspiration lately, though, comes from my grandmother…my Yiayia (Greek for Grandmother). My grandfather recently died, and I went to stay with her for a week during the funeral and other events. She has done so much in her life, and she has endured so much that it’s hard to look at her seemingly ordinary life as a housewife (now widow) and avid church goer and just see her as another boring old lady who hangs around the house all day long. It makes me realize that what I do with my boring ordinary life isn’t boring or ordinary – it’s real. I’m successful with what I do, for the most part, and that makes me exceptional in her eyes. That should be good enough for me. 🙂

    Hey guys, great comments!

I agree that the “breakthrough” and “fireworks” moments are great — and very inspiring, but as you’ve mentioned, there are a lot of less thrilling factors that can inspire us in everyday life 🙂

Really appreciate your thoughts on this one!

  8. When I’m lacking inspiration, I know it’s time to slow down. When I slow down and notice the “everyday” elements of my life and those in it, I find inspiration. By “slow down,” I mean call a loved one I haven’t spoken to in a while and reconnect; go out for a run and realize that my household doesn’t implode because I’m gone for 45 minutes; or listen to music and let the songs take me to different emotional places. Inspiration for me requires re-centering. Once I’m re-centered, I find the inner strength to face challenges that seemed daunting when I was out of balance and uninspired.

  9. We had to answer this question for school my response was
    freedom
    learning
    dreams
    stories people tell me
    People
    Yourself
    Nature
    Possibilities!
