Where I live, and in many predominantly Christian countries, today’s a public holiday. Woo! For me that means sleeping in, taking it easy, and staying up late. But for you, it might mean family time, or a chance to get away from it all. So I thought I’d ask:
What’s your favorite holiday?
To be honest, my favorite holidays are the lesser ones—the odd day off here or there; the more obscure public holidays. They seem to pop up at odd times, often mid-week rather than as additions to the weekend, and they’re less likely to galvanize the family into let’s-get-together mode.

These days are obligation-free, and in my mind, that means anything’s possible. If I decide I want to build something, I can. If I want to go somewhere, I can. If I want to spend all afternoon in the kitchen, or the forest, or a deep bath, I can. I don’t need to pack or plan. Everything’s spontaneous—and goes my way—for one glorious day!

I love Christmas, but not for the usual reasons. Ok…maybe for some of the usual reasons. I was not brought up in a religious family (my mother was a Christmas loving atheist!), and my husband is Jewish. But we’ve transformed Christmas into a way to celebrate our relationship and everything we love and appreciate about one another. We have the tree and all the usual “Christmasy” things, but our focus is really on each other. Christmas is truly our Valentine’s Day (which we usually ignore because it’s the week after my husband’s birthday, and we celebrate then).

My favorite Holiday/ annual celebration is Halloween. I have always loved Halloween since I was a child.
It’s so much fun to go to a community and see tons of people trick-or-treating and having a good ol time. A lot of communities set up grills and cook food outside while waiting for the kids to stop by and get some candy.
I like the entire time from thanksgiving to new years. It feels like one really long holiday. And I think it’s one most people connect with. No matter what religion you are, there is a little something for you to connect with during this time.
